A truly unique and purpose-driven marathon experience. The Sierra Leone Marathon isn’t just a race — it’s a journey that connects you directly with the communities you’re running to support. Organised by Street Child, this event combines physical challenge, cultural immersion, and deep emotional impact. The course itself is one of the toughest I’ve run: hot, humid, and hilly, with a mix of road and dirt tracks that test both body and mind. But every step feels meaningful — the support from locals, the children cheering, and the knowledge that your effort is funding education makes it incredibly special. Race logistics are well handled given the rural setting — clear briefing, excellent local coordination, and a true sense of camaraderie among international runners and the Street Child team. This isn’t about PBs — it’s about purpose.
Expect heat, dust, and a dose of humility — and come away changed.
Highlights: Visiting Street Child schools and projects before the race Community spirit and authentic connection with locals.
Tough but rewarding course. A sense of global impact through running. If you want a marathon that gives as much back as it takes — this is it.

Thank you for your brilliant review Simon, it was amazing to welcome you to Sierra Leone for the marathon - I'm glad you found finishing the 42km so rewarding, not only for yourself but others.
This was a really well-planned trip, with an incredibly well-thought out itinerary that allowed us travelling with SC to get an honest insight into Sierra Leone and the work they are doing with communities in the country. We had packed days getting to meet beneficiaries, evenings spent bonding together with SCoSL staff, and a good amount of ‘down time’ scheduled in too.

An amazing experience in a country few have been to, great schedule beautifully organised in challenging conditions and an extraordinary learning experience
Had an incredible trip running for Street Child in Bo, an experience unlike any other that exceeded all expectations. Alongside the marathon, we had the opportunity to visit schools and local businesses, which made the trip even more meaningful. The run itself was amazing; running through the rainforest still feels surreal. We felt safe, supported, and well looked after throughout. Truly an unforgettable experience.

Delighted to hear how much you enjoyed the run, well done
Bo isn’t just a destination; it’s an experience that stays under your skin — humid, raw, and full of life. I travelled there for the Bo Half Marathon, expecting a challenge, but what I found was a community that ran beside you — cheering, laughing, offering coconuts and encouragement when you needed it most.
The trails were wild and unpredictable — red dirt, uneven ground, tropical air so thick it felt like part of the workout. But somehow, the energy of the people made every kilometre lighter. There was this unspoken rhythm between runners and locals — kids sprinting barefoot beside you, strangers shouting your name like you were one of their own.
The course, set against a backdrop of red earth roads, palm-lined paths, and bustling neighbourhoods, was both challenging and deeply rewarding. Throughout the route, local residents gathered along the roadside to cheer, encourage, and even offer coconuts to runners — gestures that reflected the community’s generosity and enthusiasm. Their presence transformed what might have been a demanding race into a shared celebration of endurance and connection.
Beyond the event itself, Bo presents a raw yet welcoming atmosphere. The town moves at its own rhythm — lively markets, friendly exchanges, and a pace of life that encourages genuine human interaction. Conversations flow easily, and even brief encounters leave a lasting impression of sincerity and kindness. Bo had a simple charm. Days moved slowly, full of colour and warmth. An inspiring and humbling destination, offering a powerful blend of culture, endurance, and genuine hospitality.
